Cortney Seltman, MA, RYT, Certified Birthing From Within Mentor

(She/ Her/ Hers)

I support and walk along side women and all birthing people, parents, partners, children and families through the transitions into and through parenthood and childhood. I love working with individuals, couples, and groups. I am a mother of three, a doula, a yoga teacher, and a Birthing From Within mentor, and spent over a decade supporting children and teenagers in peace-building and experiential education programs in the US and abroad.

  • Perinatal Mental Health- I support individuals and couples through all the twists and turns of the perinatal period, including infertility, pregnancy, abortion, pregnancy loss, infant death, preparing for and processing labor and birth, and the postpartum period (which can last for 2-3 years!) I have lots of experience supporting people as they move through the many emotions and moods that can be a part of this time in life.
  • Wellness and Mindfulness- I believe stress and unresolved trauma or unprocessed pain can cause physical, emotional, and relational distress and dis-ease. Using mindfulness, body awareness techniques, and drawing on my experience as a yoga teacher, I can support you in finding more peace and calm even with external stress or chaos, and help you feel more well and whole in body, mind, and spirit.
  • Parenting Support (and other applied Creativity and Creative Problem Solving)- I believe we are all artists of our own life, and becoming a parent and other major life transitions give us opportunities to get creative and create the life we want to live. If you feel unsupported, stuck, uninspired, or unsure how to change dynamics, relationships, or patterns in your life or in your parenting, let’s work together and find some new ways of being!

How I Can Help

I work from a strengths-based, trauma-informed, feminist, and ecosystem approach to mental and physical health. I pay attention to what is happening in the moment, what is unresolved or may be stuck from past experiences, and believe it’s important to consider family, community, and broader systems of power and oppression that may empower or disempower you as we do this work. I believe in focusing on what is going well and what your strengths are, in addition to discussing challenges or problems, and I believe that I can help unlock answers and wisdom that you already hold to help heal yourself. Together we will set goals for our work together and how you want to feel differently as a result of our therapeutic work together. I want to know what’s worked for you and what hasn’t worked in the past to guide our work together.

More About Me

I am happiest outside on a walk or run in the woods, puttering about in my garden, snuggling with my kids or my partner, traveling to warm places with oceans, or cooking and eating delicious food with friends and family. I was born and raised in Central Vermont but have lived in Pittsburgh for the last decade, and have been a stay-at-home mom, a graduate-student mom, and a working mom to my three kids. I’m passionate about working to create a more just and equitable world for all people, stronger and more resilient communities, spaces for true dialogue and sharing, and supportive relationships for all of us, especially for those raising young children.
